Mali Orders Closure of All Schools Amid Severe Fuel Shortage
Education Minister Amadou Sy Savane announced via a state broadcaster that every learning institution throughout the West African nation will cease operations beginning Oct. 27 through Nov. 9 in response to the escalating crisis.
According to Savane, academic activities are set to resume on Nov. 10.
The West African nation has been paralyzed for weeks by a fuel supply emergency triggered by militant factions blocking critical supply routes used by tanker convoys, with the capital Bamako bearing the brunt of the disruption.
Massive queues have stretched outside filling stations as public transportation networks and motorbike taxi services face near-total collapse, transforming Bamako's typically congested thoroughfares into eerily deserted corridors.
Universities in the capital region previously announced suspension of instruction, reporting that both faculty and students cannot physically access facilities due to the transportation breakdown caused by fuel scarcity.
The US Embassy in Bamako declared on Oct. 24 that non-essential diplomatic personnel and their dependents will evacuate Mali as the fuel crisis intensifies alongside deteriorating security conditions.
On Friday, the embassy additionally stated it cannot deliver routine or emergency consular services outside Bamako and emphasized that a travel advisory for Mali remains actively enforced.
